What is hyaluronic acid filler?

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule found naturally in skin, where it binds water and helps tissue stay plump and supple. In its natural form it breaks down within days, so for filler use it is cross-linked into a stable gel that lasts for months. Manufacturers adjust the degree of cross-linking, particle structure and concentration to create gels with very different behaviour — from soft, spreading products that blend into thin skin to firm, cohesive products that hold shape over bone.

Two properties matter most when choosing a filler: how firm it is (often described by a measure called G prime) and how well it holds together. Firm, cohesive gels lift and project; soft, flexible gels smooth and refine. In Korean, HA filler is usually called 히알루론산 필러.

How Doje Clinic chooses and places HA filler

Doje Clinic's starting point is that filler is a structural tool, not a line eraser. Dr. Byun Jeik first assesses facial structure, ageing pattern and goals, then decides whether a concern is best addressed with filler, lifting, collagen stimulation, energy devices or a combination. Filler is used only as far as needed, which helps avoid the heavy, overfilled look that comes from repeatedly adding volume to correct sagging.

When filler is the right tool, the choice is made per area. Deep support points such as the cheekbone, chin or ligament regions typically call for structural filler; mobile or thin areas such as the under-eye, marionette or lip zones call for soft filler. Dr. Byun's experience spans several product ranges: he is a Belotero Expert Committee member and demonstrated at the 2024 Juvederm MD Codes event.

Who it suits — and who it doesn't

  • Suits: volume loss, flattened contours and shadows from lost support.
  • Suits: people wanting reversible, adjustable correction.
  • Not ideal alone: sagging-driven changes, where lifting should lead.
  • Postpone: pregnancy or breastfeeding, active infection, autoimmune flare-ups or an event within days.

What to expect step by step

  1. 1:1 consultation with Dr. Byun: structure, expression and goals.
  2. Plan: areas, products and order are agreed, alongside any lifting.
  3. Treatment: numbing, then placement by needle or cannula with attention to safe planes.
  4. Review: checked upright and in movement before you leave.
  5. Aftercare: written guidance, plus contact via WhatsApp, KakaoTalk or LINE.

Safety

HA filler is widely used, but it is a medical procedure. Common effects include swelling, tenderness and bruising. Rare but serious risks include vascular occlusion, which is why anatomical knowledge, careful technique and the availability of hyaluronidase matter. Report increasing pain, skin colour change or vision symptoms immediately. Read more in safety and side effects.

Cost

Filler cost depends on product, number of areas and whether it forms part of a program. It is quoted after a 1:1 consultation; Korean aesthetic fees are non-covered (비급여) and set per plan. Ask for a written quote.

Frequently asked questions

How long does hyaluronic acid filler last?

It varies by product, area and metabolism. Deep structural placements usually last longer than soft filler in mobile areas around the mouth.

Can HA filler be dissolved?

Yes, in most cases hyaluronidase can break it down, which makes HA filler adjustable if a result needs correcting.

Why does Doje sometimes recommend lifting instead of filler?

When a fold is caused by sagging, adding filler can make the face heavier. Repositioning tissue first often means less filler is needed.

What is the difference between soft and structural filler?

Soft filler is flexible and suited to thin, mobile areas; structural filler is firmer and used for deep support and projection.

Does filler hurt?

Most people feel brief pressure or stinging. Topical numbing and lidocaine-containing gels usually keep discomfort low.

Is filler safe?

It is widely used, but rare complications exist. Experienced, anatomy-based injection and prompt management are key safety factors.
