Filler versus biostimulator
Hyaluronic acid (HA) filler is the most familiar injectable: a gel of a substance naturally present in skin, cross-linked so it lasts. It works by occupying space — restoring a hollow, supporting a ligament, refining a fold — and the result is visible immediately. Because HA can be broken down with an enzyme, it offers a safety margin that matters most in delicate areas.
Radiesse works differently. Its calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres sit in a gel carrier that gives immediate support; as the carrier is absorbed over the following weeks, the microspheres act as a scaffold that stimulates the body to produce its own collagen. This makes Radiesse both a volumiser and a biostimulator. When diluted, it is also used to improve firmness and skin quality across broader areas, such as the lower face and jawline, rather than to add shape.
How Doje Clinic chooses
Dr. Byun Jeik, named one of Korea's 22 filler experts by Medical Times, chooses by area and goal rather than habit. HA is typically preferred where precision and reversibility matter most: under the eyes, lips, fine folds and areas near important vessels. Radiesse is considered where firmness and support over a broader area are the priority — for example, as an option within the Jawline Program to improve definition and skin quality along the jaw, or in the Mid-Face Program to support a thread lift.

Side-by-side comparison
| Radiesse | Hyaluronic acid filler | |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Immediate support plus collagen stimulation | Direct volume and hydration |
| Depth / target | Deep support; diluted for broad skin firming | From superficial to deep, depending on gel type |
| Best for | Jawline, lower-face firmness, deep support, skin laxity | Under-eyes, lips, folds, ligament support, contour |
| Not typically used for | Under-eyes and lips | Broad biostimulation |
| Sessions | One or a short series — varies | Usually one; top-ups as advised |
| Onset | Immediate support, collagen builds over months | Immediate |
| Longevity | Varies | Varies by product and area |
| Reversibility | Not enzyme-reversible | Usually dissolvable with an enzyme |
When Doje combines them
The two are often complementary within one plan. A typical combination is HA at specific points that need precise shaping — a ligament support point, a tear-trough shadow, a marionette fold — with diluted Radiesse used across the lower face to improve firmness. Following a lower-face thread lift, Radiesse may help maintain support as collagen builds. Products are kept in separate areas and layers, and quantities are kept conservative.
Which should you choose?
- HA filler — if you need precise volume in a defined area, especially delicate zones, or want the reassurance of reversibility.
- Radiesse — if you want support and firmer skin over a broader area, such as the jawline and lower face.
- Both — if you need shaping at specific points and overall firmness.
- Something else — if the main issue is skin texture or hydration; see skin boosters.
Recovery and aftercare
Swelling, tenderness or bruising may occur and usually settle within days. Avoid pressing or massaging the area unless instructed; see filler aftercare.
Cost
Fees are quoted after a 1:1 consultation because product, quantity and area are individual. Ask for a written quote; Korean non-covered (비급여) aesthetic fees are set per plan.

Frequently asked questions
Is Radiesse a filler?
It provides immediate support like a filler and also stimulates collagen, so it is often described as a biostimulator.
Can Radiesse be dissolved?
Not with the enzyme used for HA filler. That is one reason HA is often preferred in delicate areas.
Is Radiesse used under the eyes?
It is not typically used under the eyes or in the lips; soft HA filler is usually more appropriate there.
Which looks more natural?
Both can look natural when the right product is placed in the right layer in conservative amounts.
Can they be combined?
Yes. Doje often uses HA for precise points and diluted Radiesse for broader firmness within one plan.
