What makes a jawline look defined

A defined jawline (턱선) is really an effect of light. We see definition when the lower border of the jaw catches light and the area beneath it falls into shadow, in an unbroken line from below the ear to the chin. Four elements create that line:

• a clear angle at the back of the jaw, below the ear;
• a smooth, continuous border along the jawbone without bulges or dips;
• enough chin projection to finish the line at the front;
• a sharp chin-neck angle, with little fullness under the chin.

When any of these softens, the eye reads the whole jawline as blurred — even if the other three are fine.

Why the line blurs

Undefined jawlines are not only an ageing issue. Many people in their twenties and thirties ask about them, and the cause differs by age and build.

• Early jowling. As the supporting ligaments along the jaw loosen, small amounts of fat and skin slip over the border and break its line. This is the commonest cause from the late thirties onward.
• Fat along and under the jaw. Subcutaneous fat over the border or beneath the chin fills in the shadow that makes the line visible.
• Skin laxity. Less elastic skin does not hold closely to the bone and neck.
• Structure. A shorter chin or a less prominent jaw angle gives the soft tissue less to rest on. This is a frequent cause in younger faces.
• Neck and posture. Neck-muscle changes and forward-head posture soften the chin-neck angle.

How Doje Clinic assesses the jawline

Dr. Byun Jeik, a surgery specialist trained at Seoul National University Hospital, divides the jaw into segments in a 1:1 consultation — angle, border, pre-jowl area, chin and submental area — and checks each one in profile, three-quarter view and with the head lowered. Visible descent along the border

Structural support

A wide muscle at the angle

If the jaw looks broad rather than blurred, the cause may be the masseter muscle; see square jaw. Slimming a large muscle can refine the lower face, but in skin with laxity it is combined with lifting so the border does not soften further.

Frequently asked questions

Can filler define my jawline?

It can when the issue is structure, such as a short chin or a weak line at the front of the jaw. If sagging or fat blurs the line, filler alone tends to add width rather than definition.

Thread lift or filler for the jawline?

Threads reposition tissue that has slipped over the border; filler adds structure where the bone framework is less prominent. Many jawlines need one or the other, some need both.

Why is my jawline undefined in my twenties?

At younger ages the usual causes are fat under the chin or a shorter chin and jaw structure, rather than sagging. The plan differs accordingly.

Can ONDA help my jawline?

It may help where subcutaneous fat softens the line. It is not a substitute for lifting when laxity is the main cause.
