Key facts
| What they are | Helios: 785/1064 nm dual-wavelength toning laser. CO2: ablative laser that removes tissue. |
|---|---|
| Main difference | Toning treats flat, spread pigment gently over a course; CO2 removes a defined lesion. |
| How Doje uses them | Helios dual toning is the base of Doje’s Pigmentation care, with intensity and sessions set by pigment depth and pattern; CO2 is a single targeted treatment. |
| Downtime | Helios: minimal, sometimes brief redness. CO2: crusting that typically takes days to heal. |
| Results timeline | Toning: gradual across sessions. CO2: visible once the spot has healed. |

Start with the mark, not the machine
“Can a laser remove this?” is the most common pigment question, and the honest answer depends on what “this” is. Broad, flat discolouration such as melasma or uneven tone behaves very differently from a single raised spot. That is why the comparison between toning and CO2 is really a comparison between two kinds of problem.
Helios dual toning uses two wavelengths — 785 nm and 1064 nm — delivered at low energy across the treated area. Toning (레이저 토닝) aims to break up excess pigment gradually without injuring the surface, so it is repeated over a course. At Doje, Helios dual toning is the base of Pigmentation care, and the intensity and number of sessions are adjusted to the depth and pattern of your pigment.
The CO2 laser works by vaporising tissue. It is precise, which makes it suited to removing a small, defined, benign lesion once a physician has assessed it. It is not a gentle, whole-face pigment treatment, and on melasma-prone skin aggressive heat can risk worsening pigment.
How Doje Clinic decides
In a 1:1 consultation, Dr. Byun Jeik examines each mark and asks how long it has been there, whether it changes with sun or hormones, and how your skin has reacted to previous treatments. A Mark-View 3D analysis helps separate surface from deeper pigment and gives a baseline to compare against.
- Flat, diffuse pigment or uneven tone — Helios toning course.
- Melasma — gentle toning with conservative settings, strict sun protection, and patience.
- A raised or defined benign spot — CO2 removal may be considered after assessment.
- Anything that looks unusual — assessed first; not every lesion is suitable for cosmetic removal.

Helios toning vs CO2 laser side by side
| Helios dual toning | CO2 laser | |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Low-energy laser breaks up pigment gradually | Ablative laser vaporises the targeted tissue |
| Depth / target | Pigment within the skin; surface kept intact | A defined lesion, removed from the surface down |
| Suits | Melasma, freckles, uneven or dull tone | Small raised or defined benign spots |
| Sessions | A course of several sessions; varies with pigment | Often a single session per lesion; varies |
| Downtime | Minimal; possible brief redness | Small scabs, typically healing over days to a couple of weeks |
| Onset | Gradual brightening across the course | After the treated area heals |
| Longevity | Pigment can return with sun and hormones; maintenance varies | A removed lesion usually stays removed; new ones can form |
When Doje combines them
Many faces have both: a background of uneven tone plus a few distinct spots. A practical sequence is to remove the defined spots with CO2, let them heal fully, and then run Helios toning for overall evenness — or to start toning first if the background pigment is the priority. Same-area, same-day combination is generally avoided, and sun protection is non-negotiable throughout because healing skin pigments easily.
Which should you choose?
- Helios toning if your concern is spread-out pigment, melasma or a generally uneven tone, and you prefer minimal downtime.
- CO2 laser if you have one or a few distinct benign spots you want removed.
- Both, in sequence if you have spots on top of uneven tone.
- Neither yet if a mark has changed recently — have it assessed first.
Cost
Pigment plans are quoted after a 1:1 consultation because the number of toning sessions and spots treated vary. Korean non-covered (비급여) aesthetic fees are set per plan; ask for a written quote.

Frequently asked questions
Is CO2 laser good for melasma?
CO2 is not usually the first choice for melasma, because strong heat can risk aggravating pigment. Gentle toning with sun protection is the more common approach.
How many Helios toning sessions are typical?
Toning is usually a course of several sessions, adjusted to the depth and pattern of your pigment. Dr. Byun sets the plan after assessment.
Will freckles come back after toning?
Freckles and sun-related pigment can return with UV exposure. Daily sun protection and occasional maintenance help.
Is there downtime after Helios toning?
Usually very little; some people have brief redness. Most return to normal activities the same day.
Can I remove a mole with CO2?
Some benign lesions can be removed after a physician’s assessment. Any mark that looks unusual is evaluated first and may not be suitable for cosmetic removal.
Can visitors do toning on a short trip?
A single session is possible, but toning is designed as a course. Dr. Byun can suggest a realistic plan for your stay.
