Dry or dehydrated — what is the difference?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different problems and need different care.

Dry skin is a skin type. The sebaceous glands produce relatively little oil, so the surface lacks the lipids that help seal in moisture. It tends to feel rough and tight year-round and may flake on the cheeks and around the nose.

Dehydrated skin is a condition. The outer layer is short of water, whatever its oil level. Oily skin can be dehydrated too — shiny in the T-zone yet tight and crepey on the cheeks. Dehydration often shows as fine criss-cross lines, dullness and makeup that settles into texture.

Why the barrier loses water

The outermost layer of the skin works like a brick wall: cells are the bricks and a mixture of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids is the mortar. Natural moisturising factors inside the cells hold water. When that structure is disrupted, water escapes through the skin more quickly — known as transepidermal water loss — and the skin becomes tight, flaky and more reactive.

  • Environment. Cold, dry winters, indoor heating, air-conditioning and long-haul flights all draw water from the skin.
  • Over-cleansing. Foaming cleansers used several times a day, hot showers and frequent exfoliation strip lipids.
  • Active ingredients. Retinoids, acids and some acne treatments can dehydrate the skin, especially when combined.
  • Age and hormones. Oil production and barrier lipids decline with age and after menopause.
  • Recent procedures. Lasers, peels and microneedling temporarily increase water loss.

A weak barrier is not only uncomfortable. It makes skin more sensitive, can worsen pigmentation after treatments and makes fine lines more visible, so restoring hydration is often the first step before other aesthetic work.

How Doje Clinic assesses hydration

In a 1:1 consultation, Dr. Byun Jeik reviews your routine, climate, travel plans and any recent treatments, then examines the skin directly. Mark-View 3D skin analysis adds objective data on texture and condition that helps judge how far dehydration is affecting the surface.

Options from mild to advanced

  1. Simplify and protect. A low-foam or cream cleanser once or twice daily, a moisturiser with barrier lipids, sunscreen, lukewarm water and a pause on harsh actives.
  2. Hydration and soothing care. Doje’s supportive care menu includes hydration care, soothing care, Aquapeel and LED to help the barrier recover.
  3. Oxygen therapy. Oxygen therapy is part of Doje’s hydration and soothing line and is often used as supportive recovery care.
  4. Skin boosters. Where dehydration keeps returning or the skin is also thin and tired, boosters such as Rejuran, exosome or Re2O may be added selectively to support skin condition from within.
  5. Address what comes next. Once comfortable, the plan can move on to texture, pigment or lifting with less risk of irritation.

Where Doje’s programs fit

Hydration care is the backbone of the hydration and soothing line in Doje’s Skin & Energy menu. It is also commonly used as preparation and recovery around other treatments, and for travellers whose skin has been stressed by a long flight; see flying after treatment.

When a dermatologist is more appropriate

Intensely itchy, red, cracked or weeping skin, patches on the body as well as the face, or dryness that does not improve with gentle care may indicate eczema, contact dermatitis or another condition. These should be diagnosed and treated by a dermatologist. Sudden whole-body dryness can also have medical causes worth discussing with your doctor.

What to expect

  1. 1:1 consultation and routine review.
  2. Skin examination and Mark-View 3D analysis.
  3. A plan starting with barrier recovery.
  4. In-clinic hydration care or booster sessions as needed.
  5. Home-care guidance for your climate and travel.

Frequently asked questions

Can oily skin be dehydrated?

Yes. Dehydration is a lack of water, not oil, so oily skin can still feel tight and look dull.

Why is my skin drier in Seoul in winter?

Cold, dry outdoor air and indoor heating both increase water loss from the skin, so barrier support matters more in winter.

Do skin boosters help dehydration?

Boosters may be added when dehydration keeps recurring or skin is also thin. Basic barrier care comes first.

Should I stop retinoids if my skin is dehydrated?

Many people need to reduce or pause strong actives while the barrier recovers. Ask the doctor who prescribed them.

When should I see a dermatologist?

See a dermatologist if dryness is very itchy, cracked, weeping or widespread, as it may be eczema or dermatitis.

How much does treatment cost?

It is quoted after a 1:1 consultation. Korean aesthetic fees are non-covered and set per plan, so request a written quote.
