Not all dark circles are the same

다크서클 (dark circles) is one of the most common eye-area concerns, but the word covers several different problems. Treating the wrong type is the main reason people feel they have tried everything without success.

• Shadow-type (structural). The skin colour is normal, but the contour is not: a hollow, a tear trough groove or a puffy bag above a groove blocks light, so the area looks dark. This page focuses on this type.
• Pigment-type. Brownish discolouration from extra melanin, often linked to genetics, sun exposure, rubbing or eczema. It is common in Asian skin.
• Vascular or thin-skin type. A bluish or purplish tint where very thin skin lets the underlying muscle and small vessels show through. It often looks worse with fatigue.

Most people have a combination — for example, a hollow that casts a shadow over thin, slightly bluish skin. Separating the contributions is the key to a sensible plan.

How Doje Clinic tells shadow from colour

In a 1:1 consultation, Dr. Byun Jeik uses a few simple observations alongside the examination:

• Light test. Shadow-type darkness changes with the direction of light: it deepens under overhead lighting and fades when light comes from in front. Pigment does not move with the light.
• Stretch test. Gently stretching the skin flattens a contour; if the darkness fades, shadow or thin skin is involved. If the brown colour stays, pigment is present.
• Head position. Looking up or tilting the head changes shadows but not pigment.
• Skin data. Mark-View 3D skin analysis can provide objective information on pigmentation and skin condition.

This tells us how much of your dark circle is likely to respond to contour correction and how much needs skin or pigment care instead.

Options from mild to advanced

Correcting the contour

For true shadow-type circles, the most direct approach is restoring the missing volume. Under-eye soft filler, placed deep and conservatively, levels the hollow or groove so light falls evenly across the area. When the shadow begins lower down, supporting the mid-face can reduce the amount of filler needed directly under the eye.

Thickening thin skin

Where thin skin adds a bluish tone, improving the skin's thickness and quality helps. Eye Rejuran and Re2O Fine are eye-area skin boosters used over a series of sessions. Eye Thermage combined with Softwave may be used to tighten crepey skin. These changes are gradual.

Addressing pigment

Filler does not change skin colour. If brown pigment contributes, Helios 785/1064 dual toning is Doje's base for pigmentation, with intensity and number of sessions adjusted to the depth and pattern of the pigment and to the sensitivity of the eye area. Daily sun protection and avoiding rubbing matter as much as any device.

Everyday factors

Sleep, allergies, eye rubbing and fluid retention can make any type of dark circle look worse. They do not cause structural shadows, but addressing them improves the overall result.

How do I know if my dark circles are shadow-type?
