Key facts
| ONDA (온다) | Microwave energy absorbed mainly in the fat layer; reduces fullness with some tightening. |
|---|---|
| Thermage FLX (써마지) | Monopolar radiofrequency that heats the dermis broadly to firm skin. |
| Key question | Is the change caused by too much soft tissue, or by skin that has lost firmness? |
| Body use | ONDA is also used for body areas at Doje (Body ONDA). |
| Downtime | Usually minimal; transient swelling or redness varies. |

Volume problem or skin problem?
ONDA and Thermage are both heat-based, non-invasive devices, so they are frequently compared. Yet they answer opposite questions. ONDA is chosen when there is too much soft tissue in a specific area — a full lower face, a soft jawline caused by fat, fullness under the chin, or stubborn areas on the abdomen and arms. Thermage is chosen when the skin itself has become looser, thinner and less elastic, so the surface creases and drapes even without excess fat.
Getting this wrong has visible consequences. Reducing fat in someone whose real issue is thin, lax skin can make them look older; firming skin over an area with substantial fat may produce only a modest change. That is why Dr. Byun Jeik starts with structure, fat and elasticity rather than with a device name.
How each works
ONDA
ONDA's microwave energy is designed to be absorbed preferentially in the subcutaneous fat layer while limiting effects on the skin surface. Heating affects fat cells and the fibrous network around them, which is why reduced fullness is often accompanied by some firming. Changes typically appear gradually over the following weeks.
Thermage FLX
Thermage heats a broad volume of the dermis and the fibrous septae below it. Existing collagen contracts with heat and new collagen is stimulated over months, giving firmer, smoother skin. A dedicated eye tip allows Eye Thermage on eyelid skin, an area where ONDA is not used.

Side-by-side comparison
| ONDA | Thermage FLX | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | Microwave | Monopolar radiofrequency |
| Depth / target | Mainly subcutaneous fat | Dermis and fibrous septae |
| Best for | Localised fullness, jawline fat, body contour | Crepey skin, mild laxity, eyelids, neck skin |
| Avoid when | The face is already lean or hollow | The main issue is deep descent |
| Sessions | One or a short series — varies | Usually one, then maintenance |
| Downtime | Minimal; swelling or tenderness possible | Minimal; transient redness |
| Onset | Gradual over weeks | Some early firmness, then gradual |
| Longevity | Varies with weight and lifestyle | Varies with ageing and skin |
When Doje combines them
A combination makes sense when a single area has two problems: fullness from fat and skin that will look loose once that fullness is reduced. After weight changes, for example, someone may have residual fat along the jaw alongside skin that has lost its spring. ONDA can reduce the fullness while Thermage supports skin firmness, so the result looks tighter rather than deflated. On the body, Doje's Body Program uses Body ONDA alongside injectable options where skin laxity is part of the picture.
Where neither device is enough — marked jowls, for example — Dr. Byun may recommend a lower-face thread lift or, for a fuller double chin, double-chin liposuction.
Which should you choose?
- ONDA — if pinchable fullness is the main cause of a heavy outline on the face or body.
- Thermage — if skin looks crepey, thin or loose but there is little excess fat.
- Both — if reducing fullness would otherwise reveal lax skin.
- Neither — if the face is hollow; volume restoration may be needed instead (see facial volume loss).
Recovery and aftercare
Most people resume normal activities quickly. Mild swelling after ONDA and transient redness after Thermage are common and usually settle. Avoid intense heat for a few days.
Cost
Fees are quoted after a 1:1 consultation because area size and combinations depend on your assessment. Ask for a written quote; Korean non-covered (비급여) aesthetic fees are set per plan.

Frequently asked questions
Is ONDA a fat-reduction or a lifting treatment?
ONDA mainly targets fat, with some accompanying tightening. Thermage mainly firms the skin.
Can ONDA be used on the body?
Yes. Doje uses Body ONDA for areas such as the abdomen and arms, planned within the Body Program.
Which is better for loose skin after weight loss?
If the issue is lax skin without much fat, Thermage or other firming options are usually more relevant than ONDA.
Can ONDA and Thermage be done together?
Yes, when an area has both fullness and lax skin. Doje combines them only when both problems are present.
Is either painful?
Both involve heat sensations that most people tolerate well with comfort measures. Sensation varies by area and person.
