Collagen Stimulation Explained · Cheongdam & Apgujeong, Seoul

Collagen stimulation means prompting your own fibroblasts to produce new collagen. Energy devices do this with controlled heat, microneedling with tiny controlled injuries, and injectables such as Radiesse or GOURI with biostimulatory materials. At Doje Clinic in Cheongdam and Apgujeong, Seoul, results typically build gradually over weeks to months and vary individually.

What collagen does and why it declines

Collagen is the main structural protein of the dermis, the thick middle layer of the skin. Together with elastin and a water-holding gel of hyaluronic acid, it gives skin its firmness, bounce and smoothness. It is made by cells called fibroblasts, which keep producing and recycling it throughout life.

With age, fibroblasts become less active, so production slows while breakdown continues. Ultraviolet light speeds up that breakdown, smoking and poor sleep add to it, and in women the fall in oestrogen around menopause is associated with faster collagen loss. The result is thinner, less elastic skin that creases and sags more easily.

Three ways to switch fibroblasts back on

  • Controlled heat. Devices such as Ultherapy Prime, Thermage, Softwave and the radiofrequency in Potenza heat tissue to a precise temperature. Existing collagen contracts, which can give some early tightening, and the heat signals the skin to remodel and lay down new collagen over the following months.
  • Controlled micro-injury. Microneedling, as in Potenza, and fractional CO2 laser create tiny, evenly spaced injuries. The skin's healing response produces new collagen and smoother texture.
  • Biostimulatory injectables. Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) and GOURI (a polycaprolactone-based injectable) provide a framework that encourages collagen formation around them. Absorbable lifting threads also stimulate collagen as they gradually dissolve.

Rejuran (polynucleotides) and exosome-based treatments are generally described as supporting the skin's repair environment rather than as direct collagen builders.

The collagen timeline

Collagen building follows the body's healing rhythm, so it cannot be rushed. A typical pattern looks like this, though individual responses vary:

  1. Day 0: any immediate effect comes from heat contraction, swelling or the volume of an injectable.
  2. Weeks 1–6: the repair phase begins and fibroblasts start laying down new collagen.
  3. Months 2–3: many people notice firmer, smoother skin around this point.
  4. Months 3–6: remodelling continues, with collagen maturing and organising.

This is why collagen-based results are judged at a later review rather than in the mirror the next morning, and why a baseline Mark-View 3D analysis is useful for comparison.

What helps, and what hinders

  • Helps: daily sun protection, not smoking, enough sleep, adequate protein and vitamin C in the diet, and a consistent skincare routine your doctor approves.
  • Hinders: sunburn, smoking, repeated aggressive treatments without recovery time, and significant weight fluctuation.

How Doje uses collagen stimulation

Collagen stimulation is rarely the whole plan; it is one tool among several. At Doje Clinic, Dr. Byun Jeik first assesses facial structure, ageing pattern and goals, then decides whether sagging, support, volume or skin quality is the main issue. Collagen boosters and energy devices are added only as far as needed, and energy devices are chosen by depth, sagging, fat and elasticity rather than applied as a package. See collagen booster vs filler.

Cost

Plans are quoted after a 1:1 consultation, with a written quote on request. Korean non-covered (비급여) aesthetic fees are set per plan.

Frequently asked questions

How long until collagen-stimulating treatments show results?

Usually gradually, with many people noticing change around two to three months and further improvement for some months after.

Is new collagen permanent?

New collagen is your own tissue, but ageing continues, so many people repeat treatments periodically to maintain the effect.

Are collagen supplements the same thing?

No. Evidence for oral collagen is mixed, and it is not a substitute for treatments that directly stimulate collagen in the skin.

Can a collagen booster replace filler?

Not directly. Boosters improve quality and firmness gradually, while filler adds immediate volume or support where it is needed.

Do thread lifts stimulate collagen?

Absorbable threads are associated with collagen formation around them as they dissolve, in addition to their immediate repositioning effect.
