Thread Lift vs Ultherapy — Cheongdam & Apgujeong, Seoul

A thread lift repositions sagging tissue mechanically with dissolvable threads, giving a visible lift from the day of treatment. Ultherapy tightens the SMAS with focused ultrasound, with gradual change over months. At Doje Clinic in Cheongdam and Apgujeong, Seoul, threads usually suit moderate sagging and Ultherapy milder laxity; the two are often combined.

Moving tissue vs tightening tissue

The simplest way to understand this choice is to separate repositioning from tightening. A thread lift physically moves tissue that has slid down — the cheek pad, the jowl — back toward where it sat, and holds it there while the threads stimulate collagen around them. Ultherapy does not move tissue; it heats the support layer so that it contracts and remodels, which firms and subtly lifts over time.

That is why the degree of sagging largely decides the answer. Mild laxity often responds well to energy alone. Once descent is clearly visible — a deepening nasolabial fold driven by cheek descent, jowls interrupting the jawline — tightening alone tends to give a modest change, and mechanical repositioning becomes more relevant.

How Doje Clinic approaches each

Thread lifting is at the heart of Doje's work: the clinic states 17 years of accumulated thread-lift experience, and each lift is designed to the individual's face shape and sagging pattern, with meticulous technique aimed at a natural, immediate lift without lumpiness. Dr. Byun Jeik, a surgery specialist trained at Seoul National University Hospital, plans thread vectors by region — mid-face, lower face or upper face.

Ultherapy Prime is used where depth-specific tightening adds something the threads do not. Dr. Byun was the Ultherapy Transducers winner at the 2024 Merz Golden Record Award, and he matches transducer depth to tissue thickness rather than applying a standard protocol.

When Doje combines them

In the Mid-Face, Marionette and Jawline programmes, a thread lift forms the core and Ultherapy Prime is one of several options. The logic is complementary: threads reposition the tissue, and ultrasound tightens the support layer around that new position. A combination is recommended only when the assessment shows both descent and laxity of the deeper layer — not as a default. Sequencing and timing are planned by Dr. Byun so that swelling from one does not interfere with assessment of the other.

Which should you choose?

  • Thread lift — if sagging is clearly visible and you want a lift you can see from the start.
  • Ultherapy — if changes are early or mild, you need minimal downtime, or you are maintaining a previous result.
  • Both — if you have moderate descent with lax deeper tissue and want both repositioning and firming.
  • A surgeon's opinion — if sagging is advanced with heavy excess skin; see thread lift vs facelift.

Recovery and aftercare

After threads, avoid wide mouth opening, facial massage and strenuous exercise for the period advised; see thread lift aftercare. After Ultherapy most people return to normal routines straight away.

Cost

Fees are quoted after a 1:1 consultation because thread design and any device options depend on your face. Ask for a written quote; Korean non-covered (비급여) aesthetic fees are set per plan.

Frequently asked questions

Which gives a more visible lift?

A thread lift typically gives a more visible, immediate lift because it repositions tissue. Ultherapy gives a gradual, subtler tightening.

Which has more downtime?

Thread lifts usually involve several days of swelling or bruising, while Ultherapy typically has minimal downtime.

How long do the results last?

The clinic states thread-lift results can last up to two years or more; Ultherapy longevity varies. Individual results vary.

Can I have both?

Yes. Doje often uses Ultherapy Prime as an option alongside a thread lift when both descent and deep laxity are present.

Am I too young for a thread lift?

Age matters less than the degree of sagging. If changes are mild, Dr. Byun may suggest energy treatment first.
