Why choosing well matters more than choosing quickly
Seoul has a dense concentration of aesthetic clinics (피부과·성형외과·의원), especially across Gangnam, and many international visitors decide within a few days of arriving. The treatments themselves — thread lifting, filler, energy-based lifting — are medical procedures. Outcomes depend less on the device or brand than on the judgement of the person planning and performing them. A careful choice is the single most effective safety step you can take.
This guide is deliberately neutral. It sets out what any patient should check, wherever they book.
1. Credentials: who will actually treat you?
- Ask for the treating doctor by name. Confirm that the doctor you meet at consultation is the one who will perform the procedure.
- Understand titles. In Korea, a clinic (의원) may be run by any licensed physician, and specialist board titles refer to a specific training pathway. Ask what the doctor's training is and how much of their work involves the treatment you want.
- Look for verifiable experience. Academic training, hospital appointments, faculty or advisory roles with product manufacturers, and published or recorded teaching are all things that can be checked.
- Check the institution. A medical institution should be able to give its official name, address and business registration details. Korea also runs a registration system for medical institutions that attract international patients; you can ask a clinic about its status.
2. The consultation: what good looks like
A good consultation is a medical assessment, not a sales conversation. Expect the doctor to:
- Ask about your medical history, medicines, previous treatments and what bothers you most.
- Examine your face at rest and in motion, and explain why a concern is happening — for example volume loss versus descent of tissue.
- Offer more than one option where appropriate, including doing less or nothing.
- Explain the realistic outcome, typical downtime, common side effects and rare but serious risks.
- Give you time to decide without penalty.
Be cautious if the plan is presented before you have been examined, or if the same package is recommended to everyone regardless of age and anatomy.

Two faces, same treatment, different results.
The difference is the design. Tell us your goals and dates; in your 1:1 consultation Dr. Byun Jeik shows you what your face needs, and what it doesn't.
3. Transparency: what to ask for in writing
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Product and device names | Lets you check what was used and tell a doctor at home later |
| Itemised written quote | Korean non-covered (비급여) aesthetic fees are set per clinic and plan; a written quote avoids surprises |
| Aftercare instructions | Recovery depends partly on what you do in the first days |
| Who to contact if something feels wrong | Especially important when you are staying in a hotel or flying soon |
| Treatment record | Useful for future treatment anywhere |
4. Red flags worth taking seriously
- You never meet a doctor, or meet one only briefly after the plan is set.
- Pressure to book and pay the same day, or offers that expire within hours.
- Vague answers about which product or device will be used.
- No discussion of risks, or the claim that a procedure has none.
- Promised results, guaranteed longevity or "permanent" claims for temporary treatments.
- Heavy treatment recommended just before a long-haul flight without discussing timing.
5. Practical points for international patients
- Plan days, not hours. Allow time for consultation, treatment and at least one check before you fly. See how many days to plan in Seoul.
- Use messaging to pre-screen. Send photos and questions in advance, but treat replies as preliminary; diagnosis happens in person.
- Clarify language support. Ask whether consultation can be held in English (see English consultation).
- Ask about follow-up after you leave. How can you send photos or questions from home?
How Doje Clinic approaches these points
At Doje Clinic (도제의원, business registration no. 417-10-95927), consultations are 1:1 and private with the Representative Director, Dr. Byun Jeik, a Seoul National University–trained surgery specialist. You can ask him directly about his training, which treatments he recommends and why, and which he would not. Plans combine treatments only as far as needed, and fees are quoted after the consultation with a written quote on request. Read the consultation process and use our consultation question list wherever you go.

Frequently asked questions
What should I check first when choosing a clinic in Seoul?
Confirm who will actually perform your treatment, their medical training and experience, and that the clinic is a registered medical institution.
Should I meet the doctor before treatment?
Yes. A doctor-led consultation with examination, options and risks explained is a basic standard for medical aesthetic procedures.
Is it a warning sign if a clinic pressures me to book today?
It is worth caution. You should be given time to consider a medical procedure without financial penalty.
Should I ask for a written quote?
Yes. Aesthetic fees in Korea are non-covered and set per plan, so an itemised written quote helps you compare and avoid surprises.
How many days should a visitor allow?
It depends on the treatment, but allow time for consultation, treatment and at least one check before your flight.
Does Doje Clinic offer a 1:1 consultation with the doctor?
Yes. Consultations at Doje Clinic are 1:1 and private with the Representative Director, Dr. Byun Jeik.
