Pain & Comfort During Treatment · Cheongdam & Apgujeong, Seoul

Most aesthetic treatments at Doje Clinic in Cheongdam and Apgujeong, Seoul, feel like pressure, heat, stinging or brief pricks rather than sharp pain. Comfort is managed with numbing cream, local anaesthetic for thread lifting, cooling, adjusted energy settings and pacing, and the sensation varies with the area, the depth treated and individual sensitivity.

Why some treatments feel stronger than others

Three things largely decide how a treatment feels. The first is depth: energy delivered deep, near the SMAS layer, is felt as a dull ache, while superficial treatments feel more like heat or a snap. The second is what lies underneath: areas where skin sits close to bone, such as the jawline, forehead and cheekbone, tend to feel sharper than cushioned areas like the mid-cheek. The third is nerve density: the upper lip, nose and around the eyes are more sensitive than the side of the face.

Personal factors matter too. Tiredness, anxiety and anticipating pain can all lower your threshold, and some people notice they are more sensitive at certain points in their menstrual cycle. None of this means a stronger sensation produces a better result; settings are chosen for the tissue, not for how much you can tolerate.

What each treatment typically feels like

Treatment Common description
Botox, Skin Botox Quick fine-needle pricks; Skin Botox involves many tiny shallow points
Hyaluronic acid filler Pressure and fullness; many fillers contain lidocaine, which eases it as you go
Thread lift A sting at the numbing points, then mostly pushing and pulling sensations
Ultherapy Prime Deep, brief heat or aching pulses, stronger over bone
Thermage Rhythmic heat followed by cooling and vibration
Potenza Prickling heat under numbing cream
CO2 laser Snapping heat, then a sunburn-like warmth

The difference is the design. Tell us your goals and dates; in your 1:1 consultation Dr. Byun Jeik shows you what your face needs, and what it doesn't.

How comfort is managed at Doje Clinic

Comfort is planned in the 1:1 consultation with Dr. Byun Jeik, alongside the treatment itself. Doje chooses energy devices by depth, sagging, fat and elasticity rather than running every device as a package, which also means fewer unnecessary passes over sensitive tissue. Depending on the treatment, the tools include:

  • Topical numbing cream applied before needle, microneedling and laser treatments, with time allowed for it to work
  • Local anaesthetic at entry points for thread lifting and liposuction
  • Lidocaine-containing fillers where suitable
  • Cooling before and after energy treatments, plus device-integrated cooling or vibration
  • Adjusting energy and pacing: deeper lines can be split, and the doctor can slow down over bony areas
  • Pauses on request: agree a simple stop signal before you begin

Preparing for a more comfortable visit

  1. Sleep well the night before and have a light meal so you are not hungry or light-headed.
  2. Tell the doctor how previous treatments felt, including any you found difficult.
  3. Arrive a little early so numbing cream has time to work without rushing.
  4. Avoid alcohol beforehand; it can increase bruising without easing discomfort.
  5. Ask what you will feel at each stage; knowing what comes next usually makes it easier.

Discomfort after treatment

After deeper work it is common to feel tender, especially along the jaw after lifting or at thread entry points when chewing or yawning. This typically eases over several days. Simple measures help: cool compresses, sleeping with the head raised, soft foods and following the specific aftercare instructions. Pain that worsens rather than improves after the first few days, or pain with spreading redness or skin colour change, should be reported to the clinic straight away.

Cost

Comfort measures are part of planning, not an upsell. Fees are quoted after a 1:1 consultation and you can request a written quote; Korean non-covered (비급여) aesthetic fees are set per plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does Ultherapy hurt?

Many people feel brief deep heat or aching pulses, strongest over bone such as the jawline. Settings and pacing can be adjusted, and the sensation stops as soon as each pulse ends.

Is a thread lift painful?

Local anaesthetic is used at the entry points, so most people feel a sting at first and then pressure or pulling. Tenderness for several days afterwards is common.

Does filler hurt?

Usually there is pressure and brief discomfort. Many hyaluronic acid fillers contain lidocaine, which numbs the area as the treatment progresses.

Can I ask the doctor to stop or slow down?

Yes. Agree a stop signal before you start; pausing, re-cooling or adjusting settings is a normal part of treatment.

Does more pain mean a better result?

No. Energy and technique are chosen for your tissue and goals; tolerating extra discomfort does not by itself improve the outcome.
