Energy Devices vs Injectables — Cheongdam & Apgujeong, Seoul

Energy devices such as Ultherapy Prime, Thermage, Softwave and ONDA deliver heat at chosen depths to tighten and remodel tissue gradually, while injectables such as filler, Botox and boosters change volume, muscle activity or skin quality directly. At Doje Clinic in Cheongdam and Apgujeong, Seoul, Dr. Byun combines them only as far as your face needs.

Key facts

What they are Energy devices: ultrasound, RF, microwave or laser platforms. Injectables: filler, Botox, collagen and skin boosters.
Main difference Devices stimulate the body to tighten or remodel over time; injectables add, relax or support directly.
How Doje uses them Devices chosen by depth, sagging, fat and elasticity — never as a blanket package; injectables placed for structure and natural results.
Downtime Usually modest for both; varies by treatment.
Results timeline Devices: gradual over weeks to months. Injectables: often immediate (Botox over days to weeks).

Two toolkits, different jobs

Most non-surgical facial treatments fall into two families.

Energy devices deliver heat to a planned depth. At Doje these include Ultherapy Prime (micro-focused ultrasound reaching deep support layers), Thermage (monopolar radiofrequency in the dermis), Softwave (parallel-beam ultrasound in the mid-dermis), ONDA (microwave energy in the fat layer), plus Potenza, Helios toning and CO2 for skin-level goals. They work by triggering the body’s own tightening and remodelling, so results build over weeks to months.

Injectables act directly. Filler restores volume or structure; Botox relaxes specific muscles; collagen boosters (Radiesse, GOURI) and skin boosters (Rejuran, Re2O, exosome) improve density or quality. Many results are visible immediately or within days.

Neither family is “better”. They address different layers of ageing: devices are good at tightening and remodelling; injectables are good at replacing what has been lost or relaxing what is overactive.

How Doje Clinic thinks about the choice

Doje’s stated principle is that energy devices are chosen according to depth, degree of sagging, fat and elasticity — and that every device is not applied as a package. In a 1:1 consultation, Dr. Byun Jeik (Merz Golden Record Award 2024 winner for Ultherapy transducers; Belotero Expert Committee) asks which layer is the problem:

  • Skin and support layers loosening — a device such as Ultherapy Prime or Thermage.
  • Volume or structural loss — filler or Radiesse.
  • Dynamic lines or a strong masseter — Botox.
  • Heavy lower face from fat — ONDA or, if marked, liposuction.
  • Visible sagging — often a thread lift, with devices or injectables supporting it.

Energy devices vs injectables side by side

Energy devices Injectables
Mechanism Controlled heat triggers tightening and remodelling Add volume, relax muscle or stimulate the skin directly
Depth / target Chosen per device: SMAS, dermis or fat Chosen per product: deep support to superficial skin
Suits Laxity, early sagging, texture, fat Hollows, folds, lines, contour, skin quality
Sessions Often one, or a series; varies Often one; Botox and boosters repeated periodically
Downtime Usually minimal to modest Possible swelling or bruising, typically short
Onset Gradual over weeks to months Immediate (filler) to days or weeks (Botox, boosters)
Longevity Varies; maintenance often planned Varies by product and area

When Doje combines them

Most of Doje’s programs blend both families because faces age in layers. The Mid-Face Program, for example, pairs a thread lift and ligament filler with optional Ultherapy Prime or Softwave; the Jawline Program can add ONDA or Radiesse to a lower-face lift. Sequencing matters: when a device and an injectable target the same area, Dr. Byun plans the order and timing so one does not compromise the other.

Which should you choose?

  • Energy device first if your face has good volume but feels looser or less defined.
  • Injectables first if you see hollows, flatness, or lines caused by muscle movement.
  • Both if laxity and volume loss appear together — common from the late 30s.
  • Thread lifting if sagging is visible enough that tightening alone will not reposition tissue.

Cost

Device and injectable plans are quoted after a 1:1 consultation, as the right combination differs for every face. Korean non-covered (비급여) aesthetic fees are set per plan; ask for a written quote.

Frequently asked questions

Are energy devices safer than injectables?

Both carry different, generally low but real risks. Safety depends on correct indication, settings and technique, which are reviewed in consultation.

Which gives faster results?

Injectables usually show results sooner. Device results build gradually as collagen remodels.

Can I do a device and filler on the same day?

Sometimes, with careful sequencing. Dr. Byun decides the order based on the areas and products involved.

Why does Doje avoid device packages?

Each device works at a different depth. Using only what the face needs avoids unnecessary treatment and keeps results natural.

Which is better for men?

The choice depends on anatomy, not gender. Men often have thicker skin and stronger muscles, which influences settings and doses.

Do I need both to see a difference?

Not always. Some faces respond well to a single, well-chosen treatment.
